Marshall Frady, the reporter who became the unofficial chronicler of the civil rights movement, here re-creates the life and turbulent times of its inspirational leader. Deftly interweaving the story of King's quest with a history of the African American struggle for equality, Frady offers fascinating insights into his subject's magnetic character, with its mixture of piety and ambition. He explores the complexities of King's relationships with other civil rights leaders, the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and the FBI's J. Edgar Hoover, who conducted a relentless vendetta against him. The result is a biography that conveys not just the facts of King's life but the power of his legacy.

This is a lyrical, intimate biography of a great and troubled figure. Frady was there for much of the major action of King's life, and speaks authoritatively as a reporter on it. But the joy in this biography is that Frady brings a larger poetic vision, almost never heavy-handedly, to his retelling of the facts of King's life. Sometimes omitting dates and other factual footnotes, he plays the melody without worrying obsessively about individual notes. The reader is immersed in King's time, King's struggles, and King's vision, and it feels like learning about this great figure from the inside out. It's an excellent and revealing biography and it's one of the few books I've perused more than once—it's absorbing nonfiction writing in the tradition of our best essayists. Highly recommended.

A sweeping survey of King's life, achieved beautifully and meticulously in a slim volume. Engaging, interesting, and intensely edifying.
