It was his magic mirror, an ancient thing for which he had paid a year’s service to a bad-tempered duke who had insisted it had an illustrious history, which the duke had never revealed, and great power, also unspecified. So far, the wizard had found the mirror generally unhelpful and always insulting, and the only thing it seemed good for was to periodically announce – without being asked – that some lady or other was the fairest in the land.
