Author Jane Yolen and illustrator Vladimir Vagin make a great team! Yolen puts a modern twist on this Baba Yaga story, in which a little girl outsmarts the crafty old witch. Yet Yolen also retains plenty of traditional story elements, such as Baba Yaga's mortar and pestle and her house on chicken feet. Vagin's colorful, detailed illustrations are enchanting.

As with many fairy tales, this one might be frightening for very young or sensitive children.
