Far be it from me to argue mysteries with the Grand Dame herself but I think she went a little overboard in her attempts to prove that the Big Four were truly all-powerful. Toward the end I was distinctly underwhelmed when yet another seemingly unconnected case turned out to lead directly back to…gasp…the Big Four.

Bleah! This is the most preposterous plot that Christie has ever conceived. Four people create and control every disaster that happens in the world and Poirot and Hastings figure out who they are and start hunting them down. Several traps are set but do not catch the crooks until the final few pages of a very disappointing novel from such a great author.

Agatha Christie was a very uneven author. This is one of her most disappointing efforts. She cobbled it together at one of the lowest points in her life with the help of her brother in law by pulling together several short stories. It reads like a spoof of Sherlock Holmes with a little bit of James Bond thrown in for thrills. The Hercule Poirot you meet in this book is a two dimensional cardboard cutout of the character we Christie lovers have come to cherish. If you want to read a 'thriller' by Christie I recommend "Cat Among the Pigeons" or the "Tommy and Tuppence" series. Don't bother with "The Big Four."

Mon ami - Where there is the Big Four, there is always danger.
