Mireille Duval Jameson is living a fairy tale. The strong-willed youngest daughter of one of Haiti's richest sons, she has an adoring husband, a precocious infant son, by all appearances a perfect life. The fairy tale ends one day when Mireille is kidnapped in broad daylight by a gang of heavily armed men, in front of her father's Port au Prince estate. Held captive by a man who calls himself The Commander, Mireille waits for her father to pay her ransom. As it becomes clear her father intends to resist the kidnappers, Mireille must endure the torments of a man who resents everything she represents. "An Untamed State" is a novel of privilege in the face of crushing poverty, and of the lawless anger that corrupt governments produce. It is the story of a willful woman attempting to find her way back to the person she once was, and of how redemption is found in the most unexpected of places.

An abduction sets this story in motion, and it never really seems to stop, even after closing the last page. I don't know how Roxane Gay managed to evoke living with PTSD so vividly and with a light touch (despite the hardness that exists throughout this story). It is a controlled piece of writing that manages to give life to the repeated narratives we tell ourselves to survive, and the inherent contradictions with which we must endure and learn to live.

This book was ok. It was really hard for me to like the main character once the book started delving more into her background and story and the main characters father just made me angry. It was hard to read at times with what she had to endure being held captive for 13 days, but it was well written and am interested in reading more by this author.

A strong debut novel about a wealthy Haitian woman who is kidnapped. I did prefer her collection of essays, "Bad Feminist."

An Untamed State is remarkable book, heartbreaking, honest and life reaffirming. Truly a memorable read by an excellent author but it was also a very difficult read, dealing as it does with such horrendous subject matter.

This is a very good book for a debut. It is hard to put down; it is hard to read at times. There are parts without any answers; repetitions that are not really necessary. The characters are fairy tale like at times, the abducted woman remains a princess with all the suffering, her husband is an impossibly patient loving man. The best secondary character is the mother-in-law, the mother of the young husband.

I struggled with this book. The story of a woman kidnapped, held for 13 days & abused every day. It didn't have a happily ever after ending thank goodness, it ended in a realistic way. It was repetitive though & that's what I struggled with & the awful ordeal it was for everyone.

Engaging, genuine and compelling story. I couldn't put it down.

This was possibly the best book I have read in a while. It is so beautiful, even when it is painful.

Wow. What a powerful book: harrowing, but very powerful and well written. Recommended!

I couldn't stop reading this book either. I wasn't sure when I read the back cover. Don't judge a book by it's cover!! Graphic, yet empowering...still thinking about it days after I have read it...

" . . .when we were less aware of the spectacle we were and when we thought we had anything even remotely relevant to say about the things that tear the world apart."
