"'Lois and Wilma are proud of their father's brand-new gold Cadillac, and excited that the family will be driving it all the way from Ohio to Mississippi. But as they travel deeper into the rural South, there are no admiring glances for the shiny new car; only suspicion and anger for the black man behind the wheel. For the first time in their lives, Lois and her sister know what it's like to feel scared because of the color of their skin."--Online description.

The Gold Cadillac by Mildred D. Taylor is a good transition book from Picture book to chapter book. The book is set up almost like a chapter book, but it is a picture book, so it is perfect for children in grades second to fourth. The Gold Cadillac is a good example of how a family should stick together during rough times, even when they do not see eye to eye.

One day the father comes home with a brand new Cadillac, and the mother was upset, because she felt the family should be saving money to buy a house. After a terrifying trip down to Mississippi the father realizes that the safety of his family is much more important then a fancy new car and he sells it.
