I was appalled from the very first page at the violence and gruesome images shown in this picture book. The publishers are advertising it for ages 4-8. I cannot imagine ever reading a book to a four year old that includes: burning a school down, being force fed worms by an adult, bondage, beheadings and more. I could see a book like this appealing to older children.
I know the whole point of the story is the little girl has a huge imagination about the horrors of school when in the end she really likes it, but I cannot like the maturity of the illustrations in a children's picture book. In my opinion, if a four year old were to have this book read to him, he would be afraid to ever go to school.
