"In 1945, Velva Jean Hart is a bona fide war heroine. After a newsreel films her triumphant return to America, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer promises to make her a star. They give her a new life story and a brand new name. As "Kit Rogers," she navigates the movie sets, recording sessions, parties, staged romances, and occasional backstabbing that accompany her newfound fame. She also navigates real-life romance, finding herself caught between a charismatic young writer and a sexy and enigmatic musician from her past. But when one of her best friends dies mysteriously and the most powerful studio in the world launches a cover-up, Velva Jean goes in search of the truth-- risking her own life, as well as her heart, in the process."--P. Velva Jean Hart gets the entire star treatment at MGM studios--new name, new biography, plus lessons in acting, singing, and new makeup and hair color: American Blonde. We get an inside look at how the studios "managed" scandals involving its stars. Her friend, Mudge, from Velva Jean's WASP training, is the person who gets her a screen test, provides her a place to live while Velva Jean gets started, and proves herself a true friend. Mudge, however, is not happy being a star and dies under suspicious circumstances. Velva Jean tries to find out what happened, while MGM tries to cover it up. Velva Jean's brother, Johnny Clay, and Butch Dawkins have started a band which plays in Hollywood, so they are close by to offer support. Finding out who Mudge actually was before becoming a "star" and who killed her and why almost cost Velva Jean her life. A very tightly knit plot with well drawn characters that we care about. I can hardly wait to see what Velva Jean's next adventure will be.
