A Virtuous Woman
A Novel
Book - 1990
For Blinking Jack Stokes, everything started with Ruby Pitt--from the day he spotted her sitting under a tree. Never mind that Jack was a skinny 40-year-old tenant farmer, and Ruby the carefully raised daughter of Carolina gentry. Jack found he could talk to Ruby, unlike other women. And Ruby knew she could trust Jack to take care of her, unlike her first husband.

Add a Commenti read this book to fulfil the goal read a celeberity book club pick. Who else but oprah right. it was ok, not great. it reminded me quite a bit of Steinbecks works. a cross between east of eden and grapes of wrath. this is the second oprah book i've read (the first being a mercy by toni morrison) i'm starting to feel you can tell a lot about a person by the sort of books they recommend. i'm beginning to think maybe i don't share oprah's ideals. i wonder what my picks say about me.
Kaye Gibbons' was first introduced to me more than 30 years ago when I purchased 'Ellen Foster' as a cassette audio for a road trip.
Then, as now, I am drawn to the characters and respect Gibbons' writing style.
If you enjoy accents, 'A Virtuous Woman' delivers!
I read Ellen Foster in the late 90's and remember loving it. I am a fan of simple stories with plump characters and this fit the bill perfectly. Definitely a quick read and perfect for a noisy airplane.
