This was our first Eleanor Estes book and I was surprised at how well-written it was. The story itself is simple, but the characters are wonderfully developed and the thinking and conversations of the children complex enough to attract equally my 12-year-old son (who usually tends towards more action-oriented stories) and my 8-year-old daughter. We listened to it on CD during a long car drive.
