This is what I call a breadcrumb novel. Morrell does a good job leaving the reader a trail of breadcrumbs in the form of plot points. It is an interesting trail with lots to see along the way and you can't wait to get to the end of it, but then the breadcrumbs run out and you discover that they were all the author had to offer. Point A to point B to point C, and now you are done. Move along, sir, nothing more to see here. It is like PT Barnum's great egress. You follow all of the promising signs and end up with nothing but an exit. Fun while it lasted and easily forgettable.

(Warning: there may be mild, generalized spoilers ahead) This is a fair-enough thriller by longtime action novelist Morrell, who created "Rambo" and therefore is greatly honored at least in some quarters. It starts out with excellent suspense and a foreboding atmosphere, hinting heavily at the supernatural, that keeps you reading. But it seems to lose some steam once other characters suddenly enter the narrative, and it ends up going a dubious "realistic" route that is harder to believe than a purely supernatural one would have been! Still, it's fun as an entertaining action read and has a lot of interesting material concerning the exploration and history of old, abandoned urban America. Worth a look for fans of well-written suspense.

I loved this book and couldn't put it down ! I don't know why as it is not usually my reading choice. I quite like some of his other books also. Just finished " The Shimmer" which was also good.

I couldn't put this one down ... from start to finish a true suspense thriller. Morell is a true storyteller with vivid descriptions and great character development. A must read.
