"He's a reclusive writer whose imagination creates chilling horror novels. She's a down-on-her-luck actress reduced to staging kids' puppet shows. He knows a dozen ways to kill his characters with his bare hands. She knows a dozen ways to kill an audience with laughs. But she's not laughing now. Annie Hewitt has arrived on Peregrine Island in the middle of a snowstorm and at the end of her resources. She's broke, dispirited, but not quite ready to give up. Her red suitcases hold the puppets she uses to make her living: sensible Dilly, spunky Scamp, and Leo, the baddest of bad guys. Her puppets, the romantic novels she loves, and a little bit of courage are all she has left. Annie couldn't be more ill prepared for what she finds when she reaches Moonraker Cottage or for the man who dwells in Harp House, the mysterious mansion that hovers above the cottage. When she was a teenager, he betrayed her in a way she can never forget or forgive. Now they're trapped together on a frozen island along with a lonely widow, a mute little girl, and townspeople who don't know how to mind their own business. Is he the villain she remembers, or has he changed? Her head says no. Her heart says yes. It's going to be a long, hot winter."--Print.

I love Susan Elizabeth Phillips and was anxiously waiting for this book to come out but, I was mildly disappointed. It was still a good book but, something was missing.

Disappointing. I gave up early in this book. For an example of the best of SEP, read First Star I See Tonight.

Author Recommendation

I did not enjoy this book at all. I have read all SEP's other books and loved them, but this one was so hard to get into, I simply gave up and moved on to another author. Not one of her better books, that's for sure.

I found the beginning of this book kind of off-putting with Annie's puppets talking in her head but mercifully that died down quite a bit as more humans got into the story. Like the main character I grew up with Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney so I enjoyed the references to those authors. I found the plot with someone wanting Annie off the island ridiculous but enjoyed the side story about the mute little girl.

While I enjoyed the beginning of this book, about halfway through it descended into a mire of cliche and contrivance from which there was no escape. I mean, what I enjoyed was cliche enough - the mystery of Theo Harp's past with Annie and his twin sister Regan that gave the book a kind of old-school gothic feel. But, as is the case in a lot of romances, the need to push the characters into bed together killed all the narrative tension and ended up introducing a whole bunch of contrived moments to show how hot and awesome Theo is.

I enjoyed this love story, but this was definitely different than a normal SEP novel in that it was darker and did not have as much of the LOL moments, as well as that I didn't feel like there was as much detail or a "full-story" as her previous novels have had. I would have given it about a 3.5 but THEN the "declaration of love" came and it was just so perfect, I bumped it up to a 4.

While both a little darker (a near drowning, mysterious break ins), and a little more ridiculous (a puppeteer?!) than previous Phillips books, the development of the relationship between Annie and Theo is nevertheless an enjoyable read.
