I've had multiple people recommend this when they needed something light and fun, and that's exactly what I got. Not the deepest in world-building like I typically expect from my urban fantasy, but high in snark and page-turning anticipation of what predicament Charley will get herself into next. I can easily see this series being a go-to for clearing my palate between heavier reads. Really fun as an audio book.

I'm reminded again why Paranormal Romance isn't my thing. I mean, Romance isn't my thing in general, but I'm so over supernatural urban fantasy that I'm six feet under it. Maybe it was reading too much Laurell K. Hamilton a decade ago, or being a True Blood (TV show) binger for a couple of years. I just could not get into this one.

There's some genuinely funny lines, but amount twice as many 'trying-too-hard-to-be-funny' lines, which made it feel forced. There's a whole host of ensemble characters, but the main character annoyed the hell out of me (I just can't get over rude, obnoxious people). There's a few mysteries but I didn't feel the tension to keep turning pages (or, in this case, listening well after I arrive home).

This may be the kind of book I'd like marginally better if it wasn't an audiobook, simply because the vocal inflection would be more in my line of snark than the narrator's. But I don't think I could ever really, really like it- Charley is just a tad too annoying for me. And Reyes is too perfect to be interesting. And the other characters feel more like plot devices. And maybe the books get better as she goes, but I just don't have the space on my TBR shelf to pursue a series that doesn't grab me at go.

Yes, if you like Janet Evanovich, you'll like Charley--similar sense of humor and similar scenarios--but not just a knock-off of Stephanie Plum

Same reader as Janet Evanovich books, so sounds a lot like her characters.
