There is something this book that I want to warn other parents about.

At the end of this story, the children go on a stake out in a neighbors yard and see a burglar going into her house. The elderly neighbor, while never physically described in the book, is portrayed (at least in the book we got) in the illustrations as a black women. The children, who are all white, paint their faces with liquid shoe polish so they will blend in with the shadows and "be like Rambo." None of the adults notice/care/comment/or portray any interest in why the children have blackened their faces. And when the black neighbor chases the burglar from her home she is described as 'glowing like a ghost' because her face is covered in white cream. This innocent portrayal of blackface/whiteface without any explanation or awareness of its history and deep racism was upsetting to me. At the end the white cream covered black women invites the black faced white children for cookies in her home without even noticing they have anything on their faces. So, yeah. I wasn't impressed with this book. Felt really tone deaf to me.
