In 1871, the captains of 32 whaling vessels made a serious mistake: they ignored the warnings of local Eskimos, who said that winter would be early, and remained in the area to hunt whales. They eventually had to abandon their ships, which were trapped in the ice, and use their smaller whaleboats to take over 1200 people (including women and children) to safety.
