Summary
Add a SummaryMercedes Thompson, aka Mercy, is a talented Volkswagen mechanic living in the Tri-Cities area of Washington. She also happens to be a walker, a magical being with the power to shift into a coyote at will. Mercy's next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she's fixing a bus for a vampire. This is the world of Mercy Thompson, one that looks a lot like ours but is populated by those things that go bump in the night. And Mercy's connection to those things is about to get her into some serious hot water...
Mercy becomes involved in the story when a teenager walks into her garage looking for work. She gives him one -- warily, because her senses tell he's a werewolf, and he's not from the local clan. But all too soon, men and werewolves come looking for him, the local Alpha has been attacked in his own home, and a dead body has been left as a warning on Mercy's front porch. The action just heats up from there, as the local seethe of vampires and at least one local witch take an interest. Fortunately, Mercy is quick on her feet and has a keen, analytical mind when it comes to sorting out conspiracy theories.
The heroine is very likeable. Tough, Smart and Funny .
I particularly like that this heroine is a self confident business owner, who accepts what she is. She recognizes her limitations of size and strength (against both men and wolves), and accepts that it's okay to leave the fight to others every once in a while.

Add a CommentI enjoy the Mercy Thompson series. Patricia Briggs does well in telling stories from Mercy's standpoint and Mercy's inner thought process is often very relatable. I like that she is so capable and smart while being so caring and real....and pretty funny. It is a fun fantasy world to get lost in.
I love these books. Patricia Briggs has created an interesting world in which the supernatural exists alongside the mundane. Mercy Thompson is a fantastic character and the other characters are equally interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed this and have continued reading the whole series.
An amazing story!
I read a lot of fantasy novels, and, after a while, they all kinda seem like variations on the same storyline. But this book breaks free of that. A truly unique storyline that held my attention for an entire day (I read it in one day).
Now I want more!
This is the first of Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson Series. The series is great, I love the twist and turns Briggs continues to add to the story-line.
recommended by a friend, went in expecting a lot more action because of mercy being an auto mechanic with martial arts training and tats, not to mention the whole shape shifter thing. instead there was a whole lotta exposition, a plethora of indistinct characters, and interspecies politics.
This is a series I can reread over and over again and have. Mercy Thompson is a strong, resilient female mechanic and a coyote walker to boot. Her world is filled with colorful characters from werewolves to vampires to fae and you never know what will happen next.
My favourite author and series by far. Mercy is a woman to be admired. fast paced plot
New author for me. Liked the plot and pace of writing. Looking forward to next book.
So close to a Sookie Stackhouse novel in terms of characters, history of unveiling, and rules/mythology of supernaturals, it is a wonder that this author hasn't been sued for plagiarism. That said, the individual characters are interesting, the main character is slightly new and has a wonderful voice, and, seriously, who can resist a sexy werewolf?
SO GLAD someone told me about this series. I'm in love.
