"Bugs, of all kinds, were considered to be “born of mud” and to be “beasts of the devil.” Why would anyone, let alone a girl, want to study and observe them? One of the first naturalists to observe live insects directly, Maria Sibylla Merian was also one of the first to document the metamorphosis of the butterfly. In this visual nonfiction biography, richly illustrated throughout with full-color original paintings by Merian herself, the Newbery Honor–winning author Joyce Sidman paints her own picture of one of the first female entomologists and a woman who flouted convention in the pursuit of knowledge and her passion for insects."--Online description.

This is a beautiful, beautiful book. A treasure! Merian's illustrations are throughout, the writing is superb, and it is a very comprehensive biography of the key points in her life, told appropriately and clearly for young readers. Merian is well-deserving of accolades, and she is an inspiration to pioneering, curious, and determined women of all ages. I love this book and plan to purchase it.

This is a terrific biography about a woman scientist living in Germany in the 1600's. Maria Merian changed scientific thinking by recording information about insects and painting intricate images of butterflies, moths and caterpillars. For a shorter, but also wonderful story of her life, read "Summer Birds: The Butterflies of Meria Merian" by Margarita Engle and illustrated by Julie Paschkis.
