All books in this series are like a tea-time chat with a friend who loves to ponder the meaning of everyday life -- repeatedly, obsessively, and charmingly. If one can accept that ALL the characters spend time debating ethics, morality, the meaning of the social contract in a democracy in their heads, in implausibly sophisticated ways, as they go about their daily chores, the series works. It is an island of calm, intelligent sanity, and a refuge from the deluge of police procedurals starring dysfunctional detectives immersed in the most violent and depressing layers of society and apocalyptic science fiction that seem make up so much of popular fiction these days. McCall-Smith is always the professor, always teaching, reminding, nudging us to think about life, and about what holds civil society together. And he does it so effortlessly, and with such delightful turns of phrase that we are drawn in, almost in spite of ourselves.

I love these books (so much that I buy them in book format), but I like them especially to listen to while doing extremely boring things (like exercise, cooking, etc). Any chance that the library will be getting the audiobook version??
