When five colleagues are forced to go on a corporate retreat in the wilderness, they reluctantly pick up their backpacks and start walking down the muddy path. But one of the women doesn't come out of the woods. And each of her companions tells a slightly different story about what happened. Federal Police Agent Aaron Falk has a keen interest in the whereabouts of the missing hiker. In an investigation that takes him deep into isolated forest, Falk discovers secrets lurking in the mountains, and a tangled web of personal and professional friendship, suspicion, and betrayal among the hikers. But did that lead to murder?

Jane Harper is my new favorite. Aaron Falk is a fascinating character to follow, as a bonus to the in-depth exploration of the strengths and flaws of the group and its members. Start with The Dry. Can't wait for the third!

Excited to read this one. I loved The Dry.

After reading "The Dry" and it's parched landscape, this story is a refreshing addition to the life story of Agent Falk. When a team building trip goes wrong, who is to blame? Has the past come back to haunt this chilly and secluded landscape?

Oh my gosh! What a FANTASTIC book!! I don't know how the author did it, but I felt like I was the sixth woman on the retreat with the other five. Gritty. Fascinating. Feral. I found the chapters about Falk and his partner, Carmen, to be very interesting, as well, but THE WOMEN. Wow. Sometimes backstories feel a bit like filler to me, but not in this book. It was ALL interesting. I absolutely cannot wait to read the next book in the series. Write faster, Jane. Write faster. 😉

This book deserved some serious editing prior to publication. There is little to no character development, but a set of sketches tied together by an unconvincing narrative, which is itself organized by a contrived temporal bifurcation that is an attempt to cleverly unwind the 'suspense' of the mystery. It appears as if the author suffered from the class sophomore slump after a successful first novel.

A quick read with some good twists and turns, really enjoyable and well-paced. One of those books that is so hard to stop reading until you sort everything out, for sure. Themes include bullying, addiction, and the powerful love of parents. I would have appreciated a little deeper character development, but the setting in the Australian bush and un-put-down-able-ness go a long ways in making up for it.

I really enjoyed this book.. forced to go on a corporate retreat with people I don't really like or get along with. I'd go crazy too. All the characters in this book have some type of flaw.
Its a good little mystery that becomes a page turner. You can feel the trees closing in on you and the hopeless feeling of being lost. Very well done.

"Hell is other people." (Jean-Paul Sartre, "No Exit") IMO, Aaron and Carmen just waste pages.

Highly recommended book with realistic characters. Starts a bit slow but then becomes “unput-downable”. Would make a great movie.
Read her first book, The Dry, and totally enjoyed that one also.
