An innocent night of fun takes a shocking turn in Not That I Could Tell , the next page-turner from Jessica Strawser. When a group of neighborhood women gathers, wine in hand, around a fire pit where their backyards meet one Saturday night, most of them are just ecstatic to have discovered that their baby monitors reach that far. It's a rare kid-free night, and they're giddy with it. They drink too much, and the conversation turns personal. By Monday morning, one of them is gone. Everyone knows something about everyone else in the quirky small Ohio town of Yellow Springs, but no one can make sense of the disappearance. Kristin was a sociable twin mom, college administrator, and doctor's wife who didn't seem all that bothered by her impending divorce--and the investigation turns up more questions than answers, with her husband, Paul, at the center. For her closest neighbor, Clara, the incident triggers memories she thought she'd put behind her--and when she's unable to extract herself from the widening circle of scrutiny, her own suspicions quickly grow. But the neighborhood's newest addition, Izzy, is determined not to jump to any conclusions--especially since she's dealing with a crisis of her own. As the police investigation goes from a media circus to a cold case, the neighbors are forced to reexamine what's going on behind their own closed doors--and to ask how well anyone really knows anyone else.

This falls in that category where I keep turning the pages, unwilling to give up even though it is not particularly riveting. I guess I liked the conclusion okay, but I cannot give it a ringing endorsement. It would do in a pinch if you are totally out of something to read.

Couldn't finish it. Dialogue was boring and I hated the fact it was similar to housewives and wine and cliched couples. Politically correct author is what she is.

This domestic thriller was a delicious read for me - likable characters, hints of romance but nothing over the top, humor, twisted family dynamics, and a plot that had me turning the pages for answers right until the end. I won't lie - I picked it for the pretty cover, but the story inside is even better!

An easy enough read, but the mystery itself was predictable and not very interesting.

I really wanted to like this book and pushed through reading it hoping the eventual twist would be satisfying. Maybe I was looking for something more shocking but in the end it was just the person they hinted at the whole time. Wasn't my favorite, but could be satisfying for someone else.

This was an interesting twist on the missing mom plot. One might think that the fire pit gathering the night before the disappearance in some way contributed to the need for Kristen to leave with her twins. As we see the neighborhood and the subsequent events through the eyes of Kristen't neighbors we realize that is not so. Then there is the return of the estranged husband to the neighborhood which adds a new dimension to the story as do the mysterious narratives in the 1st person. Ultimately we are confronted with many issues that women face in their lives from the loss of an unrequited love to domestic violence to dealing with a spouse's deployment. There is much here for everyone and I think it would make a wonderful book group selection.
