The Walkers of Dembley --- by --- M. C. Beaton.
This is an early installment in the career of Agatha Raisin: Agatha hasn’t as yet embarked on her career of sleuthing; she hasn’t as yet wed her neighbour, James Lacey; Sir Charles is the victim of a crime, one lucky to survive, saved by the timely arrival and intervention of James and Agatha. The story line, however, is just as challenging as ever: they don’t call a novel like this a mystery for nothing: it’s a mystery until the end who did the crimes.
