As in the earlier thriller "Mrs. Pollifax on Safari", author Dorothy Gilman presents a sharp-eyed description of post-colonial Africa - the people; the land, climate, and wildlife; and the political and economic issues and challenges. Gilman adds a dash of young love to balance the cast of evil characters. A solid offering in the series. Not quite as crazy as some of the others.

In her new adventure [following on "Mrs. Pollifax Pursued"], Mrs. Pollifax, a part-time CIA agent, accompanies her young friend Kadi Hopkirk to the African country of Ubangiba, where Kadi's childhood friend, Sammat, is soon to be crowned king. Sammat has asked for Kadi's help to dispel fear, in the minds of Ubangibans, of sorcery being the cause of a string of deaths in which the victims appear to have been clawed to death by a lion. These crimes are especially terrifying because there are no lions in Ubangiba. Under Sammat's selfless leadership Ubangiba is recovering from the devastation wrought by two greedy presidents-for-life who preceded him in office. But Sammat has dangerous enemies. Mrs. Pollifax wades into the fray, hunting for the source of the bloody terrorism that threatens Sammat and Ubangiba.
