"Murphy Shepherd is a retired priest, living alone on an island, and tending the grounds for a church with no parishioners. But when his best friend dies and asks that Murph scatter his ashes at the end of the world, Murph lashes the ashes to the front of his boat and heads south down the Intracoastal waterway. Along the way, his path intersects with a dance instructor named Summer who is searching for her daughter. It doesn't take Murph long to realize that Summer's search is even direr than they knew and that her daughter has been abducted into the world of trafficking. As they search for Angel, they also discover a stowaway. And it's no coincidence the stowaway chose his boat. There's more to Murph than it first seems, but agonizing memories have long compelled him to keep the truth hidden."--Publisher description.

This is the newest book from one of my favorite authors. I had to patiently wait 2 months past its release date for my library to get it due to being closed during the pandemic. The first 50 pages were confusing and filled with so much boat terminology and descriptions of the Florida waterways that I was about ready to call it quits. How could this be the Charles Martin book I was so anxiously awaiting. But once the dog got on board things started getting better. One by one, Murph picks up more strays and the cast of heartfelt characters CM is known for brought the book to life. The action scenes are over the top and you have to suspend belief that Murph and Gunner can survive all the bullets and mayhem. Since I wanted them to survive I was willing to do that. Although I have to admit that this wasn’t one of my favorites by this author, it’s still written in his style that pulls you into the characters and makes you want to read nonstop until the end - I read it in 2 days. Seems like there is a possibility here that he could continue this story with a sequel. I really liked the characters, so minus the boat stuff, I would look forward to seeing this group again.
