"He's been doing the hard stuff for three years, but he's never seen anything like this. In the small rural town of Bluestem, an old man is bound in his basement, doused with gasoline and set on fire. Three weeks before, a doctor and his wife were murdered. Three homicides in Bluestem in just as many weeks is unheard of. It s also no coincidence. And it's far from over..."--Publisher description.

I enjoyed this book (on audio) tremendously. Murders, yes, but not the horrific blood and gore of some series and lots of interesting characters. I really like Virgil Flowers, and I'm looking forward to listening to the rest of this series.

The plot is intriguing, but the characters are a bit 2 dimensional. The reader for this audio version intones like he is reading a grocery list--a monotonous deadpan tone that makes it hard to tell when characters are speaking, and what is going on. Not an experience I would repeat, but I might try the text version of the next novel in the series.

This is the first John Sandford book I read (or in this case, listened too). I will continue the series.

John Sandford is the master for crime stories. They always have suspense, humour and the story teller for this one (Eric Conger) is excellent. It will keep you guessing and just when you thought there would be nothing left to tell there is one more surprise.

Typically, John Sanford is one of my favorite authors. Yet, just as Babe Ruth could not hit a homerun every at bat, Sanford writes and misses outside his 'Prey' series. This story is DULL, long on violence and short on interest. Don't waste your time unless you prefer a 2 of 10 stars.
