I've loved Beverly Cleary ever since I was a child, and I am really enjoying rediscovering the characters that I grew up reading about. While I did read the Ramona series and the Ralph series, as well as some of her other stories, I never read about Henry Huggins. That, I have discovered, was a mistake that I am now determined to rectify.

This is the first book Cleary published, and it is the base for all of her stories about Klickitat Street. And just as she understands the minds of little girls, she understands the minds of little boys as well. The characters pop out of the book, and it is as if I can talk to them myself. The fantastic look into the life of what could be any boy that you meet on the street is a grand start to a distinguished career.

If you have ever wanted a book about 'a normal kid' then Cleary is the author you want to read. Whether you want a girl main character or a boy main character (or even a mouse!) there is something in her massive list of books that will fit you. If you're a little boy, or you want to understand them, Henry Huggins is the book for you!

I'm sure the book is great, but when you download it, it's not really in Spanish. Darn.

Beverly Cleary is a magical author. I loved this book. Henry Huggins, a ten year old boy, finds a dog named ribsy, who is ragged and torn and flea bitten. The two have beautiful adventures. It is a really funny book as well. So add this book to your bookshelf.

Laugh out loud! funny.
I read the 2000 (50th anniversary edition) with updated illustrations by Louis Darling.
This is the edition in my granddaughter's library. ( When Skyping it's best to have the same editions.)

For all who know Beverly Cleary as only the author of Ramona books, I heartily recommend all of her titles. My son who is seven loves all of her books. Henry Huggins is a wonderful portrait of a boy from a time long past, but with lessons for the ages. Beezus and Ramona also make appearances as fixtures in the neighborhood. Henry's relationship with Ramona is hysterical. These books are wonderful.
