The book is written in the form of a journal kept by Catherine Hall, a young girl living in a rural village in New England with her widower father and younger sister. The journal details her daily life between the years of 1830 and 1832. Among the events of these two years are several that would have a profound impact on the rest of her life. These include her assistance to an escaped slave, her father's remarriage, and the sudden death of her best friend.

I had to read this book for school last year and I can confidently say that this is the most boring book with no plot whatsoever. Save your time and read a good book.

A wonderful account of life during hard times in the 19th century, a family without a mother, being taken care of by their father. Reminiscent of Sarah Plain and Tall. Having long-lasting friendships, experiencing death, journaling memories...it's a very good read.

"The journal of a fourteen-year-old girl, kept the last year she lived on the family farm, records daily events in her small New Hampshire town her father's remarriage, and the death of her best friend." (Novelist Review)
