Wildly successful real estate mogul James Kier gets the shock of a lifetime when he opens the newspaper and discovers his own obituary has been mistakenly printed. Says the notice, "He was known as a fierce, oftentimes ruthless, businessman." Kier's initial anger soon melts with the realization that he's been given a rare opportunity to face his own legacy. This is a shameless re-telling of the Scrooge story and of course the familiar story arc has broad appeal. Set in contemporary times, it lacks the lugubrious atmosphere of Dickens' original tale. To make his point, Evans exaggerates his anti-hero's callousness to such a degree that he gives the impression of playing a role -- e.g. referring to his dying wife, in her presence as a "mistake"; this calls to mind Scrooge's rejoinder "are there no prisons?" but hardly achieves Dickens' credibility of character. So, in the end my greatest criticism of Evans' book is its lack of subtlety.

This was an excellent holiday read. Evans has masterfully retold the story of Scrooge only with a modern day twist. I read this book in one day. Could not put it down.
