_Don't Hurt Laurie!_ is a story about child abuse which feels a bit as though it's been done by the numbers. It's easy to imagine a checklist for issues related to abuse getting ticked off one at a time as the story covers them competently but without inspiration. On a subject like this, it's not hard to go *very* wrong, because everything is so highly charged that even minor failures of realism can be very important. This book doesn't go wrong, it just doesn't offer any particular insight or originality in its handling of its subject, either. I will say I think the ending is handled fairly well. Still, with the number of other books out there dealing with these issues, there aren't a lot of reasons to put _Don't Hurt Laurie!_ near the top of any list.
