"Furnace Penitentiary: the world's most secure prison for young offenders, buried a mile beneath the earth's surface. Convicted of a murder he didn't commit, sentenced to life without parole, "new fish" Alex Sawyer knows he has two choices: find a way out, or resign himself to a death behind bars, in the darkness at the bottom of the world. Except in Furnace, death is the least of his worries. Soon Alex discovers that the prison is a place of pure evil, where inhuman creatures in gas masks stalk the corridors at night, where giants in black suits drag screaming inmates into the shadows, where deformed beasts can be heard howling from the blood-drenched tunnels below. And behind everything is the mysterious, all-powerful warden, a man as cruel and dangerous as the devil himself, whose unthinkable acts have consequences that stretch far beyond the walls of the prison. Together with a bunch of inmates--some innocent kids who have been framed, others cold-blooded killers--Alex plans an escape. But as he starts to uncover the truth about Furnace's deeper, darker purpose, Alex's actions grow ever more dangerous, and he must risk everything to expose this nightmare that's hidden from the eyes of the world."--Publisher description.

I've finished the whole series and have became attached including the characters, i think donavon dies in this book and i cried lmao. The author is so amazing and a great person, at the end of the last book he writes the sweetest note. you will be able to really get to the know characters, i feel like I've known them. You won't regret reading escape from furnace, its wonderful, exciting, emotional, and will keep you on the edge of your seat. Theres so much more the story then just what the first book has to do with. By the way for the ones still reading this series, keep an eye on Warden cross.... there's someone much much horrific then him. By the end of series, you would have never expected what will happen. But trust me, its horrible. Bittersweet.

Very good start to what looks to be a great series. I'm definitely going to pick up the next one. I was a bit older than the intended audience, so the pacing was quicker than I'm used to, but I still enjoyed it.

Quite an exciting book, I might say. A little horror, and an overall great read.

Alex is running a string of burglaries when he and his best friend are caught in the act, and Alex is framed for murder. Alex is sentenced to life in the infamous prison "Furnace" which houses only teens. It was created especially for that purpose after a summer of shocking gang murders several years earlier. Not only is Furnace unusual in that it is almost completely underground, there are also huge freaky guards, monster dogs and machine guns. Worst of all are the men in gas masks who take you away in the middle of the night… With the help of his cellmate and a few friends, Alex manages to steer clear of the guards and gangs to survive. But Alex wants to do more than survive- he wants to escape and get his life back. "Beneath heaven is hell. Beneath hell is Furnace." Grade 9+ , 288 pages
