"In the wake of Araluen's uneasy truce with the raiding Skandians comes word that the Skandian leader has been captured by a dangerous desert tribe. The Rangers--and Will--are sent to free him. But the desert is like nothing these warriors have seen before. Strangers in a strange land, they are brutalized by sandstorms, beaten by the unrelenting heat, tricked by one tribe that plays by its own rules, and surprisingly befriended by another. Like a desert mirage, nothing is as it seems. Yet one thing is constant: the bravery of the Rangers."--Publisher website.

I felt that this instalment in the bestselling 'Ranger's Apprentice' series was really, really well-written, full of unexpected twists and interesting character developments and vivid descriptions. Flanagan has captured the essence of his plot, characters, and setting in such a magnificent way. I loved the involvement of Cassandra, Duncan, and Gilan in the story.
Note: don't read this one before 'The Sorcerer of the North' (as many people recommend).

Read it 4 times and is my favourite book ever

For a much more detailed review, check out this book on my blog!

This was a great addition to the series, filled in some gaps that were missing from the story, and allowed us to explore more of this fantasy world. It was also a great character development book for Will and Cassandra. I wish I would have known before reading books 5 and 6 because I might have read this one first and then continued on, but it doesn’t really matter.

I don't have a favorite Ranger's Apprentice book, but this one certainly comes close. I was a little surprised by how much I liked it, because after reading the summary, I didn't expect too much from it. However, it's well-paced and exciting, with great new characters and more fleshing out of relationships between the old ones. Also, its got lots of twists and turns that aren't too confusing. Whoever hasn't read this is in for a great read!

I thought that this 8th installment of the Ranger's Apprentice series was the best so far. At first I wasn't sure how it was going to end up; it seemed to be moving fast and Will, Horace, Halt, Gilan, Princess Cassandra (aka Evanlyn) and Svengal seemed very close to getting Erak back within the first 20 out of 49 chapters. But the book then took a few unexpected twists to make Erak's return much farther away...

"When we get back, I'd advise you not to refer to Pauline as a 'plump, motherly widow' in her hearing. She's very good with the dagger she carries, and you need your ears to keep that ridiculous helmet of yours in place." -Halt.
